Summary
The Arkansas Department of Correction/Department of Community Correction (ADC/DCC) Major is responsible for supervising and directing the activities of the correctional facility unit or for overall facility security. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.
Typical Functions
Supervises a protective service worker staff by interviewing, recommending hire/fire, assigning and reviewing job assignments, and evaluating the performance of incumbents. Supervises and directs searches for contraband; counts, oversees meals, and supervises inmates/residents in housing, work, and other areas. Oversees, directs, and monitors staff and inmate/resident work activities by providing job instruction, and provides technical expertise on proper policies and procedures. Assures adequate security coverage, in accordance with agency staffing requirements, evaluates situations, and determines an appropriate course of action. Conducts searches for escaped offenders. Reads, reviews, and applies information contained in inmate/resident records related to the inmate''s/resident''s health/safety and to the security of the facility, and provides appropriate information to staff. Investigates incidents to assure compliance with agency policy, councils inmates/residents, and participates in disciplinary hearings. Receives and reviews all inmate/residents disciplinary actions to determine level of adjudication for the offense. Observes and monitors resident/inmates'' movement to ensure proper security. Counsels inmates/residents on personal problems and prison adjustment problems. Prepares and writes activity reports and other routine reports. May use chemical agents and firearms to control inmates/residents. Performs other duties as assigned.
Special Job Dimensions
Frequent exposure to danger, overtime, weekend duty, and on call may be required.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Knowledge of supervisory practices and techniques. Knowledge of the characteristics of and response to human behavior. Knowledge of laws, regulations, and policies concerning the treatment of inmates/residents. Knowledge of correctional security requirements/practices. Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of lower-level supervisors and/or subordinates. Ability to oversee security systems. Ability to interpret laws and regulations and develop unit policies. Ability to prepare and present oral and written reports.
Minimum Education and/or Experience
The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus five years of experience in correctional security or law enforcement, including four years in a supervisory capacity. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.

Must possess a valid Arkansas driver''s license.
Agency Specific Information
The starting salary for this position is $43,134.00. All salary offers are subject to approval by the Office of Personnel Management subject to authority provided by the state pay plan.
